At Michaels’ website, we respect the privacy of our users and are committed to protecting it. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and disclose information from users of our website.

We created this policy to demonstrate our firm commitment to the privacy of our users. We believe that transparency in how we process information is critical in building and maintaining trust with our audience.

What This Policy Covers

This policy applies to information we collect on our website and through any related services, sales, marketing, or events.

This policy does not apply to practices of companies that we do not own or control or to people that we do not employ or manage.

Our Core Beliefs Regarding User Privacy

  • User privacy is fundamental to a great experience – We will never sell or share your personal data without your explicit consent.
  • Transparency is key – We will be transparent about how we collect and process your information. This policy is one way we aim to do that.
  • We only collect what we need – We only collect information that helps us achieve the purpose you authorized. We don’t collect additional personal information beyond what is required.
  • Security is critical – We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to help protect your personal information against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction.

Information We Collect

We only collect information about you if we have a reason to do so–for example, to provide our services, to communicate with you, or to make our services better.

We collect information in three ways: if and when you provide information to us, automatically through operating our services, and from third party sources. Let’s go over what that means.

Information You Provide to Us

It’s probably no surprise that we collect information that you provide to us directly. Here are some examples:

  • Basic account information: We ask for basic information from you in order to set up your account. For example, we require individuals who sign up for an account to provide a username and email address–and that’s it. You may provide us with more information–like your name–but we don’t require that information to create a Michaels’ account.
  • Public profile information: If you have an account with us, we collect the information you provide for your public profile. For example, we collect:
    • First and last name
    • Picture
    • Bio
    • Location
    • Birthdate
    • Gender
    • Website
    • Social media handles
  • Communications with us: You may also provide us information when you respond to surveys, communicate with our Support team or others through the websites, participate in community discussions, or sign up for a newsletter. When you communicate with us via form, email, phone call, social media, or otherwise, we store a copy of our communications (including any call recordings as permitted by applicable law).
  • Payment and billing information: If you buy something from us–a subscription to access premium content. For example, we collect your name, address, credit card number, and billing information in order to process your payment, send you invoices, and keep track of billing and payments.
  • Content you submit: We collect content that you submit to the Services. This includes any posts, comments, links, messages, emails, photos or other content that you send via the services.

Information We Collect Automatically

We also collect some information automatically:

  • Log data: Like most online service providers, we collect information that web browsers, mobile devices, and servers typically make available, including the browser type, IP address, unique device identifiers, language preference, referring site, the date and time of access, operating system, and mobile network information. We collect log data when you use our Services–for example, when you create or make changes to your account by logging into our Services.
  • Usage data: We collect information about your usage of our Services. For example, we collect information about the actions you take while logged into or using our Services–in other words, we log when you’re viewing or modifying your profile, posting or commenting on content, signing up for a newsletter, responding to an email, clicking on links or ads, interacting with other users, or otherwise using the Services via a browser or device. We also collect information about what happens before or after you use our Services via email or text messages – for example, if and when you open an email from us or click on a link in a text.
  • Location data: With your permission, we may collect information about the precise location of your device. We collect location data from devices in a few ways. For example, you may manually choose to geo-tag posts with your location. We may also approximate your location from your IP address.
  • Cookies and similar technologies: Like most online services, we use cookies, web beacons, and other similar technologies to collect additional website usage data and to operate our Services. Cookies are small data files that are stored on your hard drive or in device memory.

We may use both session cookies (which expire once you close your web browser) and persistent cookies (which stay on your computer until you delete them) to help recognize you on subsequent visits, remember your previously selected preferences, to optimize and tailor ads, and other purposes.

You can instruct your browser, by changing its options, to stop accepting cookies or to prompt you before accepting a cookie from websites you visit. However, some features of the Services may not function properly if you don’t accept cookies.

We may also use clear gifs in HTML-based emails sent to our users to track which emails are opened by recipients. This allows us to gauge the effectiveness of certain communications and the effectiveness of our marketing campaigns.

We may use third-party analytics tools like Google Analytics that utilize cookies to collect non-identifying information about things like how often users visit our Services, what pages they visit, and what other sites they used prior to coming to our Services. Google Analytics collects only the IP address assigned to you on the date you visit sites, rather than your name or other personally identifying information.

Information from Other Sources

We may obtain information about you from other sources, including through third-party services and organizations to supplement information provided by you. This supplemental information allows us to verify information that you have provided to us and to enhance our ability to provide you with relevant advertising based on your public profile information.

Here are some examples of the supplemental information we may obtain:

  • We may access publicly available information from social media platforms to create lookalike audiences for advertising purposes.

How We Use Information

We use information about you as mentioned above and as follows:

  • To allow you to create and maintain your account
  • To provide our Services to you, including:
    • Customizing content
    • Serving you ads and offers

  • To provide you with announcements related to our Services and the performance of our business, newsletters, marketing materials, promotional and special offers, and other information that may be of interest to you

When We Disclose Information

We take care to allow your information to be accessed only by those who really need to in order for us to provide our Services, or as otherwise described in this policy. Below are the parties with whom we may share your information and why.

Service Providers

We work with various service providers and business partners to help us deliver personalized, quality service to you. These parties assist us with various tasks, including data hosting and maintenance, analytics, customer care, marketing, advertising, payment processing and security operations.

We may share information about you with these service providers or business partners, but only to enable them to perform services on our behalf and under obligations consistent with this policy.

Here are examples of our service providers and partners:

  • Cloud hosting services. We host our platform, serve our content, and store your data on cloud hosting services like Amazon Web Services, Linode or DigitalOcean. As we grow, we may pursue additional providers to ensure redundancy.
  • Email service providers. We may share your email address with email service providers to send you emails and newsletters. For example, we integrate with services like MailChimp for email marketing.
  • Payment processors. When you purchase a subscription with us, we provide your payment information to payment processing services like Stripe.
  • Commenting service providers. We use third party services like Disqus to power the comment sections on our website. Information like your username, profile picture, and comments may be stored on Disqus’s servers.
  • Web analytics services. We use analytics services like Google Analytics to help us measure traffic and usage trends. These tools collect information from your browser or mobile app sent directly to the service provider.
  • Customer support services. We provide information to third party customer support services like Zendesk that help us communicate with you. This allows us to more effectively respond to your requests.

Links to Third Party Sites

Our Services may include links to other websites whose privacy practices may differ from ours. When you submit information to any of those third party sites, your information is governed by their privacy policies, not this one. We encourage you to carefully read the privacy policy of any website you visit.

Security and Compliance with Laws

We may disclose your information to comply with applicable laws and regulations, to respond to a subpoena, search warrant or other lawful request for information we receive, or to otherwise protect our rights or the rights of third parties.

We have security measures in place to help prevent unauthorized access and use of user information. However, transmission via Internet is never completely secure. We strive to protect your personal data but cannot guarantee the security of your personal data transmitted through our Services.

With Your Consent

We may disclose your personal information for any other purpose with your consent.

Your Rights Over Your Information

We want you to be in control of your information, so we provide you with the following tools:

Access / Update tools in product: Tools and account settings that help you access, rectify or remove information that you provided to us and that’s associated with your account directly within the Services.

Device permissions: Mobile platforms like iOS and Android generally have permissions systems for specific types of device data and notifications, such as phone book or location services. You can change these permissions at any time on your device.

Right to erasure: You have a right to request the erasure of the personal information we have about you. Please note that we may retain certain information if we need to retain it to fulfill our legal obligations or meet other lawful purposes.

Right to restriction of processing: You have a right to request that we restrict processing of your personal information when we are no longer using it but are simply storing it, if you contest the accuracy of your personal information, if our processing is unlawful, or if we no longer need the data for our processing purposes. When processing is restricted, we can still store your information, but will not process it further except in limited circumstances permitted under law.

If you feel that we’re in breach of applicable privacy laws, you can lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

How We Retain Information

We retain your personal information for as long as needed to provide you our Services. We may also retain some of your information as necessary to comply with our legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce our agreements, or fulfill other legitimate purposes.

Consistent with these requirements, we will try to delete your information quickly upon request. Please note, however, that we may need to retain certain information beyond the timeframe outlined above if necessary for legitimate business purposes or if required by law.

Location of Site and Data

Our Service is operated in the United States. If you are located outside of the United States, please be aware that information we collect may be transferred to and processed in the United States. By using our Service, you acknowledge that your information may be transferred to our facilities and those of our service providers in the United States and other countries around the world.

Changes to Our Privacy Policy

We may revise our policies from time to time. The most current version of the policy will govern our processing of your personal information and will always be available at our website.

If we make a change to this policy that, in our sole discretion, is material, we will inform you via an update or email to this privacy policy. By continuing to access or use our Services after changes become effective, you agree to be bound by the revised privacy policy.
